B3 - Biofuels Flashcards
What is the word equation for producing ethanol?
Glucose -> ethanol + CO2 + energy
What is gasohol?
A mixture of ethanol & petrol.
What can gasohol be used for?
As fuel for adapted cars.
What is biogas?
70% methane, 30% CO2.
Where is biogas made?
In a digester/generator.
How is biogas made?
By microorganisms fermenting waste carbohydrates.
What would be used in a small scale biogas digester?
Plant & animal waste.
What would be used in a large scale biogas digester? [2]
Sludge waste from sewage works or a sugar factory.
Why must a biogas digester be kept at a constant temperature?
The microorganisms are respiring.
Why can’t biogas be stored as a liquid? What does this mean?
It requires too high pressure.
It must be used straight away.
What are the uses of biogas? [4]
1) heating.
2) cooking.
3) lighting.
4) powering turbines to make electricity.
What can the by-products of biogas digesters be used for?
Fertiliser.
How is ethanol produced?
By the fermentation of sugar cane/maize by yeast during anaerobic respiration.
