What is the role of red blood cells?
To carry oxygen.
How are red blood cells adapted? [2]
They have a large surface area & no nucleus.
What do the red blood cells contain?
Haemoglobin.
What does haemoglobin do in the lungs?
Bond with oxygen to become oxyhemoglobin.
What does oxyhaemoglobin do in tissues?
Split to release oxygen into cells.
What do white blood cells do?
Fight disease.
What do white blood cells produce? [2]
Antibodies & antitoxins.
Describe the structure of a white blood cell.
It has a nucleus.
What do platelets do?
Clot.
What does clotting of platelets do? [2]
Stop blood loss & stop microorganisms getting in.
What are platelets?
Small fragments of cells.
Describe the structure of a platelet.
No nucleus.
What happens if you have a lack of platelets?
Excessive bleeding & bruising.
What is plasma?
A liquid carrier.
What is in plasma? [9]
Red & white blood cells, platelets, nutrients, CO2, urea, hormones, antibodies, antitoxins.
