B3 - Osmosis Flashcards
If there is a strong solution and a weak solution, which way will the water move?
From the weak to the strong
What molecules can and can’t pass through a semi-permeable membrane?
Yes water, no sucrose
What is tissue fluid?
Water containing oxygen & glucose that surrounds body cells
Where does tissue fluid come from?
It is squeezed from capillaries to supply cells
How does tissue fluid work?
There is a different concentration to fluid inside the cell, so water moves in/out via osmosis.
What will happen if the cell is short of water?
It will draw water in from the tissue fluid
Describe an experiment related to osmosis
Potato cylinders. Two solutions of water and sugar.Measure lengths before and after.
Describe the outcome of the experiment and what this means?
The potato cylinder in the water solution will grow slightly as it will draw in water.
Definition of osmosis?
Movement of water molecules from high water concentration to low across a semi-permeable membrane
