B3 - Kidneys & Homeostasis Flashcards
What happens to excess proteins after digestion?
Converted to fats/carbs in the liver.
What is produced as a waste product of converting fats/carbs to proteins?
Urea.
Where does urea come from & go?
Released from liver into blood, then kidneys filter it out into the bladder.
What happens if the ion content in the blood is wrong?
It will affect the osmosis in cells and cause damage.
How are some excess ions lost?
Sweat.
How is water taken into the body?
Food & drink.
How is water given out of the body? [3]
Urine, sweat & breathing.
What happens to you’re urine when cold and why?
It become more pale & dilute because you don’t sweat.
What happens to your urine when you’re hot and why?
It is dark & concentrated because you sweat.
How do sports drinks benefit after exercise?
They replace water, sugar & ions lost during exercise.
When does homeostasis occur in the kidneys? [3]
Removing urea from the blood.
Adjusting ions in the blood.
Adjusting water in the blood.
