A

And lots of people watch it, even though they’re still so hungover from New Year’s Eve, instead of getting a good night’s sleep.

Katie: Nein, du?

Gogo: Ja, natürlich. Was ist das für ‘ne Frage?

A

Here we go.

22
Q

Wir sind jetzt gerade in der Gondel der Seilbahn, aber das ist nicht der einzige Weg, hier hoch zu kommen.

A

We’re in the cable car gondola right now, but that’s not the only way to get up here.

23
Q

die Gondel, die Gondeln

A

gondola (i.e. a container in which passengers travel, esp. one hung from a thick wire which moves up a mountain)

24
Q

Es gibt noch die Gletscherbahn und die Zahnradbahn, aber die Seilbahn ist am schnellsten und diese wird auch die Weltrekordsbahn genannt.

A

There is also the glacier cable car and the cog railroad, but the cable car is the fastest and is also called the world record cable car.

25
Q

The Zugspitze Round Trip

A
  1. Start and destination: Zugspitzbahn station Garmisch-Partenkirchen
  2. Stops: Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Zugspitze plateau– Zugspitze summit – Lake Eibsee – Garmisch-Partenkirchen
  3. Mountain railways: cogwheel train, Gletscherbahn cable car, Cable car Zugspitze
26
Q

die Gletscherbahn

A

Gletscherbahn cable car:

Up to the summit of Germany’s highest mountain in just a few minutes: the 1,000-metre-long Gletscherbahn cable car takes visitors from the Zugspitze plateau to the Zugspitze Summit.
From there, it’s only a few metres to the golden summit cross.

27
Q

die Zahnradbahn

A

Cogwheel train:

The 90-year-old cogwheel train takes you from the Zugspitzbahn station in Garmisch-Partenkirchen via Grainau to Lake Eibsee and through the 4.5-kilometre Zugspitztunnel. First stop: Zugspitze plateau at 2,600 metres above sea level.

28
Q

die Seilbahn

A

Cable car Zugspitze:

  1. Take the Cable car Zugspitze downhill – from the Zugspitze summit to the Eibsee valley station.
  2. The Cable car Zugspitze holds three world records:
    (i) With a construction height of 127 metres, the Cable car Zugspitze has the world’s highest steel construction support tower.
(ii) With 3,213 metres from the support tower to the top station, the Cable car Zugspitze has the world’s longest free span.
(iii) It overcomes the world’s largest total ELEVATION GAIN of 1,945 metres.
29
Q

Elevation gain

A

There are three main elements thrown in the pot when it comes to how “hard” a hike will be:
(a) how much elevation you’re climbing,
(b) over how many miles, and
(c) the type of route it is.

For example, there’s a big difference between a 2 mile hike with 1000 feet of elevation and a 10 mile hike with 2000 feet of elevation:
The 2-miler may be shorter but you’ll likely have a bucket of sweat and a skyrocketing heart rate by the end of it. The 10-miler, on the other hand, is a slow and gradual climb. Which you find easier depends on your preferences, but for just about any hiker the 2-miler will be more challenging.

Elevation Gain: The amount of elevation between the trailhead and the end point. AKA, the actual amount you will climb.
