B1.7 The Nervous System Flashcards
What is stimuli?
Responding to changes in the environment
What is the CNS?
Central nervous system
The brain and the spinal cord
What is the peripheral nervous system?
Nerves taking info from sense organs into the CNS, and from the CNS to effectors
What are receptor cells
Special dpcells adapted to detect stimuli
Name things within animal cells
Nucleus
Cytoplasm
Cell membrane
Name a few sense organs + info
Skin- pressure, temp, touch, pai Tongue- chemicals in food (taste) Nose - chemicals in air (smell) Eyes- light (sight) Ears- sound, balance
How do info pass from receptors?
As electrical impulses,
Travels along NERVE CELLS called NEURONES to brain,
Brain coordinates response
Explain reflex action
Stimulus, receptor, sensory neurone, relay neurone, motor neurone, effector, response
S R SN RN MN E R
What are effectors?
Glands/muscles that carry out a response
- muscle responds by contracting
- a gland responds by secreting chemical substance
