What are infectious diseases?
Caused by micro organisms that invade the body
What are parasites?
Harmful micro organisms that live in the body which gain nutrients and shelter
Name a few non-infectious diseases and examples of them
Vitamin deficiency- scurvy (lack of vitamin c)
Mineral deficieny- anaemia (lack of iron)
Body disorder - diabetes, cancer
Genetic inheritence- red-green colour blindness
What is cancer?
When cells in the body keep on dividing and form an abnormal mass called a tumour
How to reduce the risk of cancer?
Do not sunbathe a lot Avoid eating too much fat Avoid eating too much red meat and processed foods Eat fresh fruit and veg Regular exercise Avoid too much alcohol
What is it called when a tumour does NOT spread to other parts of the body?
Benign
What is it called when a tumour spreads to other parts of the body?
Malignant- many cancer cells all over the body
