What are infectious diseases caused by?
Parasitic micro organisms that infect you, called pathogens
Pathogens- damage cells and release chemicals called toxins
Name a few types of pathogens and examples of diseases?
Fungi- athlete’s foot
Bacteria- cholera
Viruses - flu
Protozoa - malaria
How are infectious diseases spread from person to person?
By vectors
How is malaria caused?
Caused by a parasite which is spread by female mosquitoes. When the mosquitoes bite people they spread the disease
How can you control malaria?
- sleeping under a mosquito net and using insect repellent
- draining areas of stagnant water
- using insectides to kill the mosquitoes
What are antibiotics?
Chemicals produced by some fungi and bacteria to kill or prevent the growth of othee bacteria or fungi
It is used to kill pathogens in our bodies when we have an infectious disease
An example of an antiobiotic?
Penicillin
