B1.1 Fitness and Health Flashcards
What is physical fitness?
Ability to do physical activity
What is good health?
Being free from disease
What is a disease?
Condition caused by any part of the body not functioning properly
Name a few of the main causes of early death in the UK
Eating too much salt
High blood pressure
Eating too much saturated fat
Smoking
Each time the heart beats, what does it do?
The muscles contract
What happens when the heart beats and the muscles contract?
Pushes blood out of the arteries at the correct pressure
What is the normal blood pressure level?
120/80 mmHg
What is systolic pressure?
The pressure in arteries when heart contracts (120mmHg)
What is diastolic pressure?
The pressure in arteries when heart rekaxes (80mmHg)
How can blood pressure increase?
Stress Smoke Eat too much salt Eat a lot of satuarted fat Drink too much alcohol Overweight
At what level is high blood pressure?
140/90mmHg
What can happen if you have high bp?
Have a heart attack
Have a stroke
Suffer from kidney damage
How does smoking increase bp?
Tobcaco smoke contains carbon monoxide and nicotine(increases heart rate)
Carbon monoxides combines with haemoglobin in red blood cells and prevents them from carrying as much oxygen
Therefore, heart beats faster to compensate-> strains heart
How does saturated fat increase bp?
Liver makes cholesterol from saturated fat
Cholestreol is carried in the blood- deposited in artery wall
Deposits narrow the artieries and restrict blood flow. The blood pressure increases- force blood through the narrow gap
What is thrombosis?
Cholesterol deposits may lead to a blood clot, known as THROMBOSIS
thrombosis-> artery supplying the heart muscles causes a heart attack (brain-> stroke)
