Why does our body need foods rich in carbohydrates and fats?
In order to provide our body with energy to move and stay alive
Why does our body need foods rich in proteins?
They are used for the growth and repair of body tissues
Why do we need small amounts of vitamins and minerals?
In order to remain healthy
What is metabolic rate?

What enzyme breaks down starch?
Amylase
What are proteins formed from?
Amino acids
In our body, what enzymes break down proteins into amino acids?
They are broken down by protease enzymes which are in the stomach and small intestine
What are lipids?
They are fats and oils we eat
What do some animals use lipids for?
Insulation and Buoyancy
What are lipids synthesised from?
3 fatty acids and a glycerol molecule
What do amino acids contain?
