B1.2.4 - Enzyme reactions Flashcards
What affects affect enzymes?
temperature
pH
enzyme concentration
substrate concentration
What is the optimum temperature for humans?
37 degrees
What is the optimum temperature for plants?
26 degrees
How does temperature affect enzyme controlled reactions
As the temperature increases the enzyme and substrate molecules move faster and collide more often making the reaction faster
If the temperature becomes too high the amino acid chains in the protein start to u ravel changing the shape of the active site
How does pH affect enzyme-controlled reactions?
If the pH of the enzyme is too high or low then the active site starts to denature
All enzymes have an optimum temperature they work best at.
How does enzyme concentration affect enzyme-controlled reactions?
The higher the enzyme concentration is, the faster the rate of reaction. This is limited bu substrate concentration. If no new substrate molecules are added, the reaction will stop
How does substrate concentration affect enzyme-controlled reactions?
The higher the s rate concentration the higher the rate of reaction. This is limited by the enzyme concentration. If there no enzymes for the substrates to bind to then the reaction will stop
