B1.2.1 - DNA Flashcards
How many chromosomes do humans have in each of their cells?
They have 46 chromosomes in each of their cells
How many chromosomes do chickens have in each of their cells?
They have 78 chromosomes in each of their cells
Where do we get our chromosomes from?
We inherit half from our father and half from our mother
What is each long molecule of DNA called?
A chromosome
What are genes?
They are short sections of DNA that code for a characteristic, such as eye colour
What is structure of DNA?
It is made up of 2 strands joined together by bases. The strands are then twisted together to form a double helix
What small units makes up DNA?
Nucleotides
What is each nucleotide made up of?
A sugar (called deoxyribose), a phosphate group and a base
What are the 4 different bases called?
Adenine
Thymine
Cytosine
Guanine
