B1.1.2 - Bacterial Cells Flashcards
What are bacteria?
They are the smallest living organisms.
What type of organism is bacteria?
It is a unicellular organism meaning it only contains of just one cell
What can bacterial cells do?
They can carry out the seven life processes - movement, reproduction, sensitivity, growth, respiration, excretion and nutrition
What are the sizes of bacteria?
Around 1um in size
What are some examples of prokaryotic cells.
Estericha coli, Streptococcus bacteria and Streptomyces bacteria
What is Escherichia coli?
It is a bacteria that causes food poisoning
What is Streptococcus bacteria?
It is a bacteria that causes sore throats
What is Streptomyces bacteria?
It is a bacteria that is found in the soil. The antibiotic streptomycin comes from these bacteria. It kills many disease-causing bacteria
Where is genetic material found in the prokaryotic cells?
It is found in the cytoplasm
What is the role of flagella in a bacteria cells extra sub cellular structure?
It is a ‘tail like’ structure that allows the cell to move through liquids
What is the role of pili in a bacteria cells extra sub cellular structure?
They are tiny hair like structures that lets the cell to attach it to structures. They can also be used to transfer genetic material between bacteria
What is the role of slime capsule in a bacteria cells extra sub cellular structure?
It is a layer outside the cell wall which prevents the cell from drying out and from poisonous substances. It is also helps the bacteria to stick to smooth surfaces
What is the role of plasmid in a bacteria cells extra sub cellular structure?
It is a circular piece of DNA that is used to stroke extra genes. They are normally not needed for the bacterium’s Dady to day survival but may help in times in stress
