B11 Flashcards
What is the endocrine system?
The endocrine system is made up og glands that secrete hormones directly into the blood stream. The blood stream transferes the chemicals to the target organ.
What does the Thyroid gland do (endercine system)?
Controlls the metabolic rate of the body
What does the Pancrease do(endercine system)?
The pancrease controlls the glucose levels in the blood stream.
What does the Adrenal do (endercrine system)?
The adrenal peperes the body for a stressful situation
What do the Ovaries do (endercine system)?
It controls the development of secondary sexual characteristic of a female and in the menstral cycle
What do the testies do (endercrin system)?
The testies control the development of secondary sexual characterisics of a male
What heppens if there is a level of glucose in your bllod stream?
The pancrease stimulate the relase of insuline
The insuline then stimulates the liver to turn the glucose into glucogen
Blood glucose is reduced
What happens when there is a low level of glucose in the blood stream?
The pacrease produces glucagon
The glucogon stimulates the liver to convert glycagon to glucose and is put into the blood stream
The blood glucose levels will rise
What is type 1 diabetes?
Type 1 diabetes is when you body produces little to no insuline
What happens with type 1 diabetes?
Without insuline your blood glucose leves will rise expanetually after you eat. Eventually, your kidney will excrete the glucose through your urine. This will therefore make you feal very thursty.
How can we treat and cure type 1 diabetes?
They will need to inject insuline
But they to cure they can get a pancrease transplant
What is type 2 diabeties?
Type 2 diabeties is when your pancrease still produces insuline, but your cell stop responding to insuline.
What happenes with type 2 diabeties?
Due to your cells not reponding to insuline, your kidney will excrete the extra glucose throuh your urine, therefore making you feel very thursty.
How to treate type 2 diabeties?
Lose weight
Watch your diet and limit your intake of carbs
What do testies do?
Testies produce sperm and testostarone.
What does the sperm duct do?
The sperm duct produces seminal fluid
What does the scrotum do?
The scrotum is outside the body so it can keep the testies below the body temperature.
What do ovaries do?
The ovaries store the eggs and produces oestregen.
What is testosterone and what does it do?
Testosterone is the main male sexual hormone, and can trigger the development of secondary sexual characteristics during puberty, between the ages of 9 and 15.
What is Oestrogen and what doe it do?
Oestrogen is the main sexual hormone for a female and is produced in the ovaries. During pubety, between the ages of 8 and 14 it will help develope the secondary sexual characteristics and matures the egg(s) during the menstral cycle.
What is the Follicle Situlating Hormone (FSH) (menstral cycle)?
FSH causes the egg to mature in the ovaries, and brings about the release of Oestrogen.
FSH is produced in the pituitary gland.
What is Oestrogen (menstral cycle)?
Oestrogen stimulates the build up of the urterous lining and stops the production of FSH whilest starting the production of LH.
Oestrogen is produced in the Ovaries.
What is the Luteinsing Hormone (menstral cycle)?
LH stimulate the release of the egg at ovulation. It stops the production of Oestrogen and stimulate the production of Progesterone.
LH is produced in the pituitary gland.
What is Progesterone (menstral cycle)?
Progesterone maintains the utarous lining. It stops the release of LH, and if there is no fertalised egg inplanted, progesterone will stop being produced.
Progesterone is produced in the Ovaries.
