B10 Flashcards
What is homeostasis?
It is where the body maintains a stable internal environment
Why we need homeostasis?
We need homeostasis as it regulates internal organs. This is important as the enzymes in the body can denature with any change.
Nervous system
Stimulus Receptor Communication Effector Response
What are reflexes for?
They help you to avoid danger or harm.
How do reflexes work?
Simple reflexes such as pain withdrawal reflex we are familiar with often involve just three types of neurones:
Sensory neurones
Motor neurones
Relay neurones
What is a Synapse?
A synapse is the gap between two nerve cells where an electronical impulse to a chemical reaction.
Cerebral cortex (the brain)
The cerebral cortex is concerned with conscious intelligence, memory and language
Cerebellum (the brain)
The cerebellum is concerned mainly with coordination, muscular activity and balance
Medulla (the brain)
The medulla is concerned with unconscious activities such as, controlling the heartbeat, the movement of the gut and breathing
