B10 - The Human Nervous System Flashcards
D. Homeostasis
The regulation of internal conditions of a cell or organism to maintain optimum conditions for function, in response to internal and external changes.
D. Receptors
Cells that detect change in the internal and external environment.
D. Coordination centres
Areas that recieve and process the information from receptors and send our signals to coordinate the response of the body. (Inc. brain, pancreas…)
D. Effectors
Muscles or glands that bring about responses to the stimulus that has been received. These responses restore conditions in the body to optimum levels.
3 examples of internal conditions?
- body temp
- water content of the body
- blood glucose concentration
D. Neurons
Special cells that pass an electrical impulse with information in along them.
D. Nerves
Bundles of hundreds/ thousands of neurons
CNS stands for?
Central nervous system
CNS made up of?
Brain and the spinal cord
D. Sensory neurons
Cells that carry electrical impulses from your sense organs to CNS
D. Motor neurons
Cells that carry information from CNS to rest of body
Nervous system summed up by
stimulus>receptor>coordinator(CNS)> effector
D. Stimuli
Changes in the environment
D.Reflexes
Automatic responses
eg: touch something hot and pull hand away
D. Synapses
Physical gaps between the neurons.
Electrical impulse turn into chemical impulses to cross the synapses
