B1: Cranial bones Flashcards
Name the bones in the neurocranium
2 x temporal
2 x parietal
Occipital
Frontal
Sphenoid
Ethmoid
Name the bones in the viscerocranium and where they are located
2 x nasal: bridge of nose
2 x zygomatic: cheekbones
2 x lacrimal: medial wall of orbit
2 x inferior nasal concha: within nasal cavity
2 x palatine: rear of oral cavity, forms part of hard palate
2 x maxilla: part of upper jaw and hard palate
Vomer: posterior aspect of nasal septum
Mandible: jaw
What are the boundaries of the anterior cranial fossa?
From frontal crest (bulge at front) to sphenoid ridge
What are the boundaries of the middle cranial fossa?
From sphenoid wings to the petrous part of the temporal bone
What are the boundaries of the posterior cranial fossa?
Between petrous part of temporal bone and occipital crest
What are the boundaries of the pterygopalatine fossa?
Between pterygopalatine plate and palatine bone
What does the coronal suture fuse?
Fuses frontal bone with 2 parietal bones
What does the sagittal suture fuse?
Fuses both parietal bones
What does the lambdoid suture fuse?
Fuses occipital to 2 parietal bones
What are the 2 fontanelles in children and where are they found?
Anterior fontanelle: junction of sagittal and coronal sutures
Posterior fontanelle: junction of lambdoid and sagittal sutures
Compare the position of the condylar process vs coronoid process of the mandible
Condylar (head) = posterior, bigger
Coronoid= anterior, smaller
What is the pterygoid process?
Both the lateral and medial pterygoid plates together (of the sphenoid bone)
What is another name for the hypophyseal fossa? What can it help to locate?
Sella turica - above and below it is the anterior and posterior clinoid processes (of the sphenoid bone)
What does the anterior cranial fossa contain?
Frontal bone
Olfactory nerve
Optic nerve
What does the middle cranial fossa contain?
Temporal lobes
Pituitary gland
Foramen (nerves and arteries)
