B-9 Operant Extinction Flashcards
(Operant) Extinction
Withholding a reinforcers that maintain target behavior, resulting in a decrease in the rate of behavior.
Partial Reinforcement Effect
Increased resistance to extinction following intermittent reinforcement
Extinction Burst
An initial sudden Increase in behavior that has been placed on extinction
Short term effect of extinction: increase in frequency or magnitude of behavior, topography change and emotional responding
Resurgence
The reappearance, during extinction, of a previously effective behavior
Ex: Screaming is put on extinction, so ignoring it. Previously effective behavior of climbing counter resurfaces to get attention
Spontaneous Recovery
The reappearance of Target behavior following extinction
Difference between Spontaneous Recovery and Resurgence
In spontaneous recovery the behavior that reappears is the behavior that’s on extinction
Whereas in Resurgence, the behavior that reappears is some other behavior that has produced reinforcement in the past.
Differential Reinforcement
Consists of two operations: reinforcement and extinction
Double pronged intervention
Types of Differential reinforcements
DRL- Differential reinforcement of Lower Rates of Target Behavior
DRH- Differential reinforcement of Higher Rates of Target Behavior
DRA- Differential reinforcement of Alternate Behavior
DRI- Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible behavior
DRO- Differential Reinforcement of Other Behaviors
DRL
Differential Reinforcement of Low Rates of Behavior.
Used to decrease/wean problem behavior.
Extinction is partial
Ex: Saying fewer cuss words over the course of the day
DRH
Differential Reinforcement of High Rates of Behaviors.
Used to increase behavior.
Extinction in place for problem behavior while gradually expecting higher rates of desired behavior for reinforcement
Ex: Tracking increased ML of water consumed daily
DRA
Differential reinforcement of Alternate Behaviors
The differential reinforcement of alternate behaviors, other than the target behavior that Serve the Same Function
Ex: Child raises hand to get attention instead of calling out
DRI
Differential Reinforcement of Incompatible behaviors
Incompatible behaviors to the target behavior are reinforced
Ex: Sucking on a lollipop instead of biting a peer
DRO
Differential Reinforcement of Other behaviors
Reinforcement of other behaviors that occur in the absence of target behavior
Ex: Problem behavior-biting. For a set amount of time if biting doesn’t occur, reinforcement is delivered. If it does, timer is reset.
