B-11 Discrimination, Generalization and Maintenance Flashcards
Discrimination Training
Procedure that results in target behavior occurring at different rates in different situations
Reinforcing a behavior in the presence of some antecedent and extinguishing (or punishing) the behavior in the absence of the antecedent.
- Simultaneous Discrimination training
- Successive Discrimination training
Simultaneous Discrimination Training
Present the child with a car and a toy dinosaur. Ask the child to point to the car.
This scenario is called a Trial
Car is the SD and the dinosaur is the S-Delta
Successive Discrimination Training
Present child with toy car and ask ‘what’s this?
Provide and fade prompts
This scenario is called a trial
Error-less Discrimination Training/Learning
Provide a prompt before an error is made so client doesn’t practice the mistake
Teaching Discrimination with few or no errors.
Ex: Fading in S-delta (incorrect stimulus)
Discrete Trial Training
An instructional method wherein the client is presented with formal opportunity to perform behavior. Consequence is provided depending on behavior.
Commonly used to teach receptive and expressive language
Conditioned Discrimination
Discrimination in which reinforcement of responding during stimulus depends on other stimuli
Ex: Name an Aquatic (other stimulus) Animal (Primary stimulus)
Generalization
Generalization occurs when a variety of stimuli elicit a certain response
Skills learnt can be used in multiple situations/places etc.
Types:
- Stimulus Generalization
- Response Generalization
Stimulus Generalization
The tendency for the effect of training to spread to other situations.
Ex: Learnt to say hello to teacher. Starts saying hello to friends, other teachers, family members etc
Response Generalization
The tendency of the effects of training one behavior to spread to other behaviors
Effects of a contingency spread to responses not yet associated with the contingency.
Maintenance
Following the removal of an intervention, the extent to which a response remains in the individual repertoire over time.
Extent to which a procedure can produce durable changes in behavior -or- a phase of acquisition that uses specially designed procedures to maintain an already-learned response
