B-12 Motivating Operations Flashcards
MO
Motivating operations
Environment variable that changes the value of given reinforcer and alters the current frequency of behavior that would access that reinforcer.
Changes the reinforcing effectiveness of some stimulus
Changes the strength of behavior that has produced that stimulus in the past
EO
Establishing Operations
Type of MO that makes the stimulus more desirable and more effective as a reinforcer
Value altering effect- Makes reinforcer More valuable
Behavior altering effect- Increases behavior likely to access the reinforcer
AO
Abolishing operations
Type of MO that makes the stimulus less desirable and less effective as a reinforcer
Value altering effect- Makes reinforcer less desirable
Behavior altering effect- Decreases the behavior likely to access a reinforcer
UMO
Unconditioned motivating operation
Motivating operations (EO or AO) that exist solely because of our species and not prior learning
Ex: Pain, food/water/sleep/sex/oxygen deprivation, too hot/cold
CMO
Conditioned Motivating Operations
Variables that adjust reinforcer value due to the person’s learning
3 types:
CMO-Transitive (CMO-T)
CMO-Reflexive (CMO-R)
CMO-Surrogate (CMO-S)
CMO-T
Conditioned Motivating Operations-Transitive
Stimulus that alters value of another stimulus
Ex: Came across collapsed man in store (stimulus) so you call 911 and follow instructions of the dispatcher (instructions are now more valuable)
CMO-R
Conditioned Motivating Operations-Reflexive
A stimulus that has systematically preceded worsening or improvement
Warning signal
Ex: Can you please tell me where the restroom is?
CMO-S
Conditioned Motivating Operations-Surrogate
A stimulus that has been paired with another MO
Ex: Whenever I’m too cold I put on another sweater. For last 6 weeks it’s been cold on Tuesday. Tomorrow is Tuesday, so I will wear an extra sweater.
Tuesday-Stimulus. The MO was paired with it becoming cold
