B-2 Stimulus and Stimulus Class Flashcards
Stimulus
Anything that changes in the environment that could affect an organism
In the A-B-C relationship, BOTH Antecedent and Consequence are Stimuli
Stimulus Class
A group of stimuli that share either a Formal (physical), Temporal (when they occur with respect to a response) or Functional (effect on behavior) properties.
What is ABC of Behavior?
Antecedent, Behavior and Consequence
Antecedent
An environmental condition or stimulus change existing or occurring prior to a behavior of interest
Consequence
A stimulus change that follows a behavior of interest
Formal/Feature Stimulus Class
Stimuli are frequently described, manipulated and measured according to it’s dimensions
Ex: Size, color, intensity, weight and spatial position relative to other objects.
Spatial positions can evoke different responses (waving hand for different functions)
Temporal Stimulus Class
Described by when stimuli occurs with regards to behavior of interest
Stimuli are associated with matter of time and/or sequence
Ex: Morning routine involves a shower, getting dressed, coffee, breakfast
Functional Stimulus Class
Described by stimulus’ effect on behavior of interest
Ex: Different types of chair, doorknobs, shoes
**Ask: What do you do with it?
