B 13 Flashcards
Natural selection
Organisms that gain an advantage are more likely to survive and breed
Mutation
Is a change in DNA code when cells divide, thus creating new variants and phenotypes.
Steps of natural selection
Mutation of gene- advantage to survival- breed- pass on genes
Selective breeding
Is a process where humans breed plants and animals for desired characteristics.
Examples of desired characteristics
Disease resistance, increased food production, dogs with gentle nature and heavily scented flowers
Problems with selective breeding
Lack of variation
Variation
Is the differences in the characteristics of individuals in a populations
Genetically Modified Crops
Had their genes modified. Normally resistant to diseases and have a higher yield.
