Axial Skeleton Flashcards

1
Q

Typical vertebra

A

Body - weight-bearing part of the vertebra, Vertebral Arch - extends posteriorly, surrounds the spinal cord. Pedicles - lateral walls of the arch. Laminae - posterior part of the arch. Vertebral foramen - the protective canal for the spinal cord. Transverse processes - boney lateral extension. Spinous process - posterior boney extension, slants inerrably, acts as a site for muscle attachment

Q

Vertebral Column

A

consists of 26 bones. Supports the head, encloses & protects the spinal cord, serves as the site of attachment for ribs and muscles of the back

Q

Fontanels

A

“soft spots” dense fibrous connective tissue, allows slight compression and distortion during birth. Allows the cranium to grow as the brain grows.

16
Q

Temporal Bone

A

Forms inferior sides and part of the base of the cranium Paired and irregular

17
Q

Occipital Bone

A

back of the skull - forms the base of the cranium.

18
Q

parietal bone

A

2 bones (paired) forms the crown of the skull

19
Q

What structures make up the lower appendages?

A

Pelvic bone, femur, patella, tibia, fibula, tarsals, metatarsals and phalanges

20
Q

What structures are part of the upper appendage

A

scapula, clavicle, humerus, radius, ulna, carpals, metacarpals, and phalanges

21
Q

What structure does the appendicular skeleton support?

A

Support and attaches the appendages to the trunk

22
Q

What structures are supported by the axial skeleton?

A

Supports the head and trunk. This includes the skull, vertebrae, ribs, sternum, hyoid bones, and middle ear bones.

23
Q

How many bones are there in the axial skeleton?

A

80 bones
