Av05 - Aerodrome Lighting Flashcards
What does ARCAL stand for?
Aircraft Radio Control of Aerodrome Lighting
What is the maximum distance between runway lights along the side of the runway?
60 metres / 200 feet
How far must runway lights be visible from?
all directions at 2 NM
What is the minimum and maximum distance between parallel lines of runway lights? (Runway width)
Min 75ft
Max 200ft
Runway lights must be “frangible.” What does this mean?
Able to break off if impacted (reduces damage to aircraft in case of runway overrun / excursion
If you were a pilot, holding position on Runway 09, you would see ______ lights at the end of the runway furthest from you
Red
If you were a pilot on final to the aerodrome, you would see _______ lights at the end of the runway closest to you
Green
If approach lighting is provided, what happens to the threshold lights?
Extended to cover the full width of the runway
If ALSF-2 is provided, what happens to the threshold lights?
Extended further out from the sides of the runway as wing bars
What colour lights shall be used for unserviceable areas at night?
Steady red
What colour are taxiway lights?
Blue
What colour are taxiway centerline lights (if installed)
Green
At the intersection of a taxiway and an apron, what lighting will be found?
two adjacent yellow lights
What colour are rapid exit taxiway lights?
Alternating yellow and green, starting ~60 metres before the turn and continuing alternating until beyond the hold short line. Once beyond the hold short line, reverts to green only.
What colour are the lights around helipads?
Yellow, or with floodlights
What does FATO stand for? (ref: heliport)
Final Approach and Take Off area
What does TLOF stand for? (ref: heliport)
Touchdown and Lift OFf area
How far away must the VASIS be visible from?
4NM
What is the usual angle of approach, indicated by the VASIS?
3 degrees
What is “Eye to Wheel Height”?
The distance, vertically, from a pilot’s eyes to the lowest portion of the aircraft in the landing configuration (with gear down)
On the VASIS (one bar or two bar) what does it mean if the both the top and bottom bar show red?
You are below the approach slope
What will the VASIS show if you are on the correct approach slope?
The downwind bar (closest) will show white
The upwind bar (furthest) will show red
What happens if you are WELL below the approach slope?
The two downwind bars will merge into one red signal
On a THREE bar VASIS, which bars does a normal aircraft use?
The Downwind (closest) bar and the middle bar. Ignore the Upwind bar.
What does VASIS stand for?
Visual Approach Slope Indicator System
What does PAPI stand for?
Precision Approach Path Indicator
If you are WELL below the approach slope, using a PAPI, what lights will you see?
All 4 red
How often does the airport beacon flash?
Every 2-3 seconds
Runway Identification Lights (RILS) are indicated in the CFS with what abbreviation?
AS
On a runway that is greater than 4000 feet, how many windsocks are required and where should it/they be?
2, one at each end of the runway.
500 feet in from the threshold, 200 feet away from the centerline
On a runway that is 4000 feet or shorter, how many windsocks are required and where should it/they be?
1, centered on the runway, 200 feet away from the centerline.
An approved dry Transport Canada Wind Direction Indicator (Wind Sock) will react to a wind speed of ___ knots by being 5 degrees below horizontal
10
When ARCAL is activated, how long do the lights remain on for?
15 min
What are the differences between the 2 types of ARCAL?
Type J - single intensity
Type K - three selections of connected systems, and generally used to scale the light instensity
