Autonomic Nervous System Overview Flashcards
What are the major divisions of the Nervous system?
CNS vs PNS; PNS divides into autonomic and somatic nervous system; autonomic divides into efferent (motor) and afferent (sensory); autonomic divides into sympathetic (arousing) and parasympathetic (calming)
The sensory nervous system communicates generally with what?
Sense organs and voluntary muscles
The peripheral nervous system generally communicates with what?
Communicates with internal organs and glands
A group of neuronal cell bodies in the CNS is called what?
Nucleus
A group of neuronal cell bodies in the PNS is called what?
Ganglion
At what vertebral levels are the preganglionic neurons of the sympathetic nervous system?
T1-L2
At what vertebral levels are preganglionic neurons of the parasympathetic nervous system?
CNS (cranial nerves 3, 7, 9, 10) and S2 to S4
Where are the post ganglionic neurons located in the sympathetic nervous system?
In the sympathetic chain and in the prevertebral ganlia via splanchnic nn.
Where are the postganglionic ganglia located in the parasympathetic nervous system?
In the walls of the organs they innervate
The sympathetic chain can also be called what?
Paravertebral sympathetic trunk
Paravertebral ganglia can also be called what?
Collateral ganglia
What are the 4 collateral ganglia pairs?
- celiac
- superior mesenteric
- aorticorenal
- inferior mesenteric
What is the ganglia impar?
The caudal most connection of the chains of ganglia
Grey rami communicans are only found in pre or post ganglionic sympathetic axons?
Postganlionic
White rami communicans are only found in pre or post ganglionic sympathetic axons?
Preganlionic
