What is the functional definion of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).
Controls involuntary visceral activity in order to maintain homeostasis or respond to stress.
What is the anatomy definion of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS).
General Visceral Efferent (GVE) system
ie. the 2-neuron pathway from the VNS to visceral organs
Above + General Visceral Afferents (GVA)
Both of the above + those components of the CNS that regulate visceral activity (ie. those components that send signals to and/or receive signals from the GVE and GVA systems.)
The General Visceral Efferent (GVE) system is divided physiologically and anatomically into 2 components:
Sympathetic
Fight or flight
Thoracolumbar (T1 - L4/5)
Parasympathetic
Homeostasis (Rest and Digest)
Craniosacral (Cranial/Sacrum)
