What are Portosystemic Shunts (PSS)?
Anomalous vessels that allow normal portal blood draining the stomach, intestines, pancreas, and the spleen to pass directly into the systemic circulation, via abnormal connection to the caudal vena cava or other systemic veins, without first passing through the liver.
What is the problem with Portosystemic Shunts (PSS)?
Allows blood to return to the systemic circulation without passing through the liver to be metabolized and detoxified.
What are the different types of Portosystemic Shunts (PSS)?
Location:
Extrahepatic - outiside liver
Intrahepatic - inside liver
Number of vessels:
Single
Multiple
Etiology
Congenital
Acquired
