Autoflight Flashcards
What does the AP require to engage?
- Both FCCs working
- One channel of hor/stab trim
- 1 YD working
- Both AHRS working
- 1 ADC operative
- No significant aircraft instability
How can you disengage the AP?
- AP ENG switch
- AP DISC
- DISC on YD
- TOGA button on throttle
- Trim Switch
- AP/SP Disc on the control yoke
When will the autopilot automatically disconnect:
- FCC detects failure
- Both YDs fail
- Stall occurs
- WINDSHEAR is detected
What is the purpose of the yaw damper?
To prevent Dutch roll and provide better directional stability
How many yaw dampers does the autopilot require?
1
Where are lateral modes found with respect to vertical modes on the FMA?
Above
When does an autopilot mode become invalid?
When it is no longer appropriate for the aircrafts current condition.
When no other lateral mode is selected, what is the default mode?
ROLL
If the Roll mode activates when the bank angle is 3 degrees, what will happen?
A wings level attitude is displayed by the flight director
If the bank angle is greater than 5 degrees when the roll mode is activated, what will happen?
Roll mode will maintain the current bank angle
If in VOR mode and directly over the VOR, what does the system do to prevent losing VOR signal?
Goes into “DEAD RECKONING MODE.”
How will you know when dead reckoning mode is active?
White “DR” appears on the lateral mode
How is the approach mode different from the nav mode?
It is specifically used during precision approaches, has reduced tolerances and both flight directors provide independent guidance information generated from their respective FCC.
What modes, if selected, will be cleared when a localizer is captured?
The TURB, 1/2 BNK and HDG
How is the Go around mode activated?
By pressing the TOGA buttons on the thrust levers
What is the heading that will be maintained and the bank limit for the heading hold command of the flight director after the TOGA buttons are pressed?
Heading at the time of activation and +/-5 degrees
What will happen to the autopilot when the TOGA button is pressed?
The AP will disconnect
How long does the go-around mode remain active?
Until another mode is selected, the FD SYNC switch is pressed, or the autopilot is engaged.
When is the 1/2 bank mode automatically selected?
When the FDs are on and the aircraft is above 31,600’
What is the maximum bank in the 1/2 bank mode?
15 degrees
What will happen if we press the 1/2 bank mode while in approach mode established inbound?
The FCC will inhibit our actions and 1/2 bank mode will not be engaged
How is takeoff mode activated?
Pressing the TOGA switches on either thrust lever while on the ground
If I engage the AP in the vertical TO mode, what will happen?
PTCH mode will be engaged and followed
During Altitude Capturing, the altitude bug is changed to 10,000 feet lower, what will happen
The AP will continue to level off at the previously selected altitude. It will not follow the Altitude bug down to the newly selected one.
What altitude does the altitude hold mode maintain?
Whatever altitude the ALT button on the FCP was pressed
Where is the IAS/MACH changeover altitude?
36,100’
When is the speed mode cleared?
When the pre selected altitude is captured
What is the speed mode used for?
Climbs and Descents
When is the GS mode armed?
When the APPR mode is pressed on, a valid localizer is selected and the aircrafts heading is less than 90 degrees from the inbound course
How long does the GS mode remain engaged?
All the way to touchdown
What pitch command is generated when using the vertical go-around mode?
A 8 degree pitch-up command
If an over speed condition occurs in ____________, the autopilot will automatically engage IAS/MACH.
VS or PTCH mode
What is the purpose of the altitude alert system?
Provides 1,000’ alert
Provides 200’ off altitude alert
When are altitude alerts inhibited?
When the glide slope is captured
When the flight directors are first selected on, the default lateral and vertical modes are ________.
ROLL and PITCH
If an over speed occurs when in the ALTS or ALT mode, the vertical mode reverts to what?
There is no change, the pilot must manually reduce the airspeed
IAPS
Integrated avionics processing system
FCC
Flight control computers 2 of them
FCP
Flight control panel
Protocol on who uses the FCP
PF will make all changes except when handflying, then PF will ask PM to make change
What is indicated by the illumination of green lights next to the mode selection buttons on the FCP?
Both FCCs have received the request for the mode and conditions are correct for the selected mode. 2 green lights = 2 working FCCs.
FD button on FCP does what?
Turns the flight director off
When do the Flight Directors operate independently?
- CAT II
- TOGA go-around mode
- WINDSHEAR of decreasing performance
In order for the autopilot to engage, both flight control computers must be _________
Functional
After takeoff and the PF calls for speed mode, the PM selects the Speed button. What occurs?
Vertical mode changes to CLB and the current airspeed is referenced & displayed on the FMA.
If you lose an engine, what will the command bars do?
Command 10 degrees pitch up.
Pressing the TOGA button in flight during an approach will:
- Command 8-10 degrees pitch up
- Disconnect the autopilot
- Sequence FMS for the missed approach
What does “TURB” mode do?
Delays response to minor changes to pitch and roll.
How do we remove both flight directors?
Push the FD on the side the arrow is pointing to. Won’t disengage if the AP is engaged.
What is the only time we use approach mode on the AP?
ILS capturing Glideslope
Amber E, Amber A means what?
Elevator servo is out of trim
Aileron servo is out of trim
