Air Conditioning and Ventilation Flashcards
On the ground, how can pneumatic air be supplied to the aircraft?
High pressure ground source
APU
Either or both engines
What are the different components of a pack?
- Dual heat exchanger
- Condenser
- Air cycle machine
- Reheater
What is indicated when “HI TEMP” is displayed on the ECS synoptic page?
Temperature has exceeded a predetermined limit or sensed other internal faults and the pack has automatically shut down
Which pack supplies most of the air to the flight deck?
The left pack
When will a “RECIRC FAN FAULT” status message be displayed?
When either fan speed decreases below 60% of normal speed or…
An overheat has occurred
Describe the flow of air through a Pack.
Bleed air is directed to HEAT EXCANGER, then to the COMPRESSOR of the ACM, through a DUAL HEAT EXCHANGER, REHEATER and CONDENSER, ACM turbine, then REHEATER, then to Air manifold.
Where are the PACKs located?
In aft equipment compartment
“HI TEMP” on synoptic page over a pack means what?
High temperature is sensed.
What will cause a pack SWITCHLIGHT to indicate OFF automatically?
If temperature exceeds limits or other certain internal faults are detected. This will cause the pack to automatically shut down.
“AUTOFAIL” displayed on ECS synoptic page means what?
A failure of the pack has occurred in automatic mode
What cools the L and R dual heat exchangers?
Ram air.
Where is the RAM air inlet and outlet?
INLET: Ram air scoop bottom forward leading edge of vertical stabilizer.
OUTLET: exhaust duct lower aft fuselage
If both packs fail, what will happen?
RAM AIR VALVE can allow ram air to enter mixing manifold where it is supplied to PAX and FLT compartments.
If “RAM AIR OPEN” status message appears, what does this mean?
The RAM AIR VALVE is open.
If the RAM AIR valve does not reach the commanded position, how will you know?
The ECS synoptic page will show the RAM AIR VALVE as being purple
How do you open the RAM AIR VALVE?
Hitting the guarded RAM-AIR Switchlight.
What is the purpose of the mixing manifold?
Where both packs and recirculated air are routed to be distributed to the compartments.
Which compartment does the left pack primarily influence? The right?
LEFT: flight
RIGHT: passenger
If a pack fails, can the other supply AC air for the whole airplane?
Yup
How is temperature controlled?
Modulation of the temperature control valve?
What does the temperature control valve do?
It allows bleed air to bypass dual heat exchanger and ACM and allows mix of hot and cold air to correct for whatever temperature is selected.
How is position of the temperature control valve changed?
AUTOMATICALLY: through the ACSC to maintain selected temperature.
MANUALLY: through temperature control toggle switch when MAN switch light is pressed.
What is the normal temperature operating range of the AC system?
5-85 degrees Celsius.
What should manual mode not be used for?
To rapidly reduce flight deck or cabin temps.
How many recirculation fans are installed and their purpose?
2, they improve system efficiency by returning cabin air to mixing unit and combining it with fresh pack air
How are the recirculation fans controlled?
Through a single switch “RECIRC FAN”
Which fan supplies the aft cargo compartment for ventilation and heating?
RECIRC FAN 1
How is AC air exhausted out of the Flight and PAX compartment?
Under the floor to the outflow valve.
