2.1
One company is required at the scene of an incident and that no further assistance is required.
When a Chief Officer has not yet responded to a box (either delayed, not available, or not
assigned) it will be the decision of whom to implement a one unit operation?
2.3
The Officer in Command, Captain or first to arrive
Lieutenant to implement a one unit operation.
When responding to alarms in or near hospitals, clinics, nursing homes etc., particular care must
be taken when rubbish is involved. At interior overhauling operations, all protective equipment
must be worn due to possible involvement of infectious material. Hospitals are required to have procedures for disposing of waste. The waste is usually packaged in different colored bags. What does each color bag mean?
RED
WHITE
BLACK
Reference #1
- Red Potentially infectious material, this waste must be incinerated and may contain needles or other sharp objects.
- White Potentially infectious material which has been auto cleaned (sterilized by superheated steam under pressure).
- Black All other waste.
SOME POINTS TO REMEMBER:
- Under fire and smoke conditions color of bag may not be discernible.
- Proper bag may not be used for a number of reasons.
- All of these bags should not be touched and should be hydraulically overhauled.
Asbestos was mentioned earlier, relative to dumpster fires. Don’t be surprised to find it in open
lots, alleyways, etc. As more building owners try to comply with asbestos removal, we can expect illegal dumping to increase.
