Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968) Multi- store Model of Memory Flashcards
Sensory register
Our immediate memory of sensory information
Attention
Focus on certain sensory information- this allows it to pass to the STM.
Iconic memory
The sensory register for visual information
Echoic memory
The sensory register for auditory ( sound ) information
Modality free
Not linked to a specific type of sensory information
What is the serial position effect?
The serial position effect supports the multi-store model. It is the tendency to recall more words at the beginning or end of a list.
What are the strengths of the theory?
1) Lot of evidence to support the theory of separate memory stores- e.g. case studies of brain damaged patients. 2) The serial position effect also provides evidence for the theory.
What are the weaknesses of the theory?
1) Too simplistic- e.g. it is thought that there may be more than one long-term memory store 2) Not all long term memories require rehearsal
What are the three stores of the Multi-store model of memory?
1) Sensory memory/ register 2) Short-term memory 3) Long-term memory
According to the multi-store model of memory, how does information move from the short term memory to the long-term memory?
Through rehearsal
How does information pass from the sensory register to the short-term memory?
Through attention.
Trigram
Three letters that had been asked to remember
