Atherosclerosis Flashcards
What are positive risk factors for atherosclerosis?
High LDL concentration
Cigarette Smoking
Diabetes
Hypertension
What are negative risk factors for atherosclerosis?
High HDL concentration
Physical fitness
What is metabolic syndrome?
Abdominal obesity
Hypertension
Elevated fasting blood glucose
Elevated blood lipid
What are the features of metabolic syndrome?
Fat in organs not designed for fat storage
What makes the plaque unstable?
Thin fibrous cap
High lipid content in core
What are the four consequences of atherosclerosis?
Narrowing of lumen
Chronic occlusion
Embolism
Aneurysm
What happens when the vessel lumen narrows?
When the plaque ruptures, it releases pro-coagulants which produce a clot that can occlude the entire vessel
What happens in chronic occlusion?
Insufficient blood flow to organ (ischaemia)
What happens during embolism?
Fragments of atherosclerosis can cause occlusion in other regions
What happens during aneurysm?
Plaque extends into the medial layer, which severely weakens the artery wall
