How does asthma present?
Increased respiratory rate
Tachycardia
Wheeze
History of atopy
How is asthma diagnosed?
Peak flow
Spirometry - obstructive pattern with good reversibility
How is chronic asthma managed preventatively?
Remove triggers if possible
How is chronic asthma managed?
SABA
SABA + ICS
SABA + LABA + ICS
SABA + ICS + LTRA
How do you identify acute severe asthma?
Unable to complete full sentences Wheeze Sats <92% RR >25 HR >110 Peak flow 33-50%
How do you identify life threatening asthma?
Exhausted Silent chest Cyanosis Bradycardia Hypotension Peak flow <33%
How is acute asthma managed?
Oxygen Salbutamol nebs Hydrocortisone/prednisolone Ipratropium bromide Theophylline/aminophylline
