asthma Flashcards
What is Atopy?
Genetic predisposition to develop IgE in response to environmental allergens
Cells involved in asthma reaction
allergens activate Mast Cells and Dendritic Cells and epithelial cells
Dendritic cells activate TH2
TH2 activates mast and B Cells and Eosinophils
Diagnosis of asthma
A history of symptoms (more than one type of symptom, occurs variably, worse at night, triggered by exercise, allergens, worse with infection)
FEV1/FVC test
Bronchodilator reversibility test
Positive Bronchodilator Reversibility Test values
Increase in FEV1 of 200mL and 12% above pre-bronchodilator FEV1 value
PEF?
Peak expiratory flow: indicates force of respiratory muscle and airway obstruction.
PEF variability = (max-min)/.5*(max+min)x100%
>20% = asthma
Asthma drug administration devices
pMDI = pressurized metered-dose inhalers
DPI = dry powder inhalers
Nebulizers
