Aspects Of Personality Flashcards
Define trait theory
An individual is born with innate characteristics which are stable in different sporting situations
What does trait theory attempt
To predict behaviour because if sports people are always going to behave in same way, you can expect same behaviour most of the time
Example of trait theory
Extrovert basketballer may also behave in extrovert manner at training or in team discussions
Problems with trait theory
Can behaviour always be predicted
Personality and behaviour can change with the situation
E.g. football can be aggressive after being found but then calm in post match interview
Define social learning theory
Behaviour is learned through socialisation instead of being born with it.
Example of social learning theory
Young footballers copying goal celebrations of professional players
Define interactionist perspective
A theory which combines trait and social learning to predict behaviour in a specific situation
What are the 2 interactionist perspectives
Lewins approach to personality
The hollander approach to interactionist theory
What’s lewins formula
B= f(P x E)
What is Lewins approach to personality
Combines social learning and trait theories
For example rugby player forming scrum may naturally approach with force but in open play, may be calmer
Describe Hollanders approach to interactionist theory
Persobality is made up of 3 features
The core of the performer
Typical responses
Role related behaviour
Describe the core
Core beliefs and values stable, unlikely to change
E.g. Core values of strong work ethic does so every game
Describe typical responses
Usual responses player makes in given situation
E.g. Attacking player who usually responds to attacking situations by making effort to make runs to find space
Describe role related behavior
Further changes to behaviour may be needed as the situation demands
E.g. Attacking player tracking back to defend to help protect lead
