What are the components of the triadic model of attitudes
The cognitive part
Affective part
Behavioural part
Describe the cognitive component
A belief
e.g. belief in the ability to win
Example of the cognitive component
Footballer believe in their ability to win the game before they component
What is the affective component
Relates to feelings and interpretation such as enjoyment
Example of the affective component
People in the gym thinking “it was hard work but i enjoyed it”
Define the behavioural component
The actions of the performer
Example of the behavioural component
A footballer who goes to training and matches at the weekend shows a good behavioural aspect to their attitude
How are attitudes formed
By associating with others and picking up opinions and values through socialisation from significant others and reinforcement
How can you change attitudes
Cognitive dissonance
Persuasive communication
Define cognitive dissonance
New info given to the performer to cause unease and attitude change
What are the 4 components of cognitive dissonance
1) New info presented to performer. E.g. coaching explaining health benefits of a balanced diet, so they don’t eat bad food
2) Ensuring practice is varied and fun, might change opinion
3) Using rewards (player of the week) may increase turnout at training
4) Coach could bring in role model from another club to encourage participation
Describe persuasive communication
Communication has to be relevant, understandable and clear which should be done by a role model or expert
