What is Asherman’s syndrome?
A condition where adhesions form in the uterus following damage to the uterus
What is the most common cause of Asherman’s syndrome?
Dilatation and curettage procedure to evacuate retained products of conception after birth or msicarriage
What are the other causes of Asherman’s syndrome?
Other uterine surgeries
After pelvic infections
What is the presentation of Asherman’s syndrome?
Secondary amenorrhoea
Lighter periods
Dysmenorrhoea
May present with infertility
Patients may have has D&C procedure, uterine surgery or endometritis
What is the gold standard investigation for Asherman’s syndrome?
Hysteroscopy - adhesions can be identified and treated
What other investigations can be performed to diagnose Asherman’s syndrome?
Hysterosalpinography - contrast injected into uterus and X-rayed
Sonohysterography
MRI
What is the management of Asherman’s syndrome?
Removal of the adhesions during hysteroscopy
