What is it?
A
Fluid outside of the gut in the peritoneal cavity

How do you test for it?
A
It is shown by demonstrating signs of fluid thrill or shifting dullness

What causes ascites? (6)
A
Malignancy, Infections (especially TB), Hypoalbuminaemia (seen in cirrhosis), Pericarditis, Pancreatitis, Myxoedema (thyroid)

What causes ascites with portal hypertension? (4)
A
Cirrhosis, Budd chiari syndrome, portal malignant nodes, IVC or portal vein thrombosis

What investigations would you do? (6)
A
FBC, LFT, U&E, CRP, Aspirate ascitic fluid for cytology, culture and protein level, ultrasound

What treatment is there? (4)
A
Treat the underlying cause, ascitic drain, spironolactone, furosemide
