  • obsessed with and afraid of death - bedroom looked over a cemetery and when she was 30 her friend died of typhus and was traumatised so her family sent her to boston
  • temporary religious experience- was a devoted catholic - 1845 - then abandoned formal worship and began practising her own faith - controversial in victorian society
  • avid writer of letters - affairs through 900 letters
  • recluse
  • mostly published posthumously
  • wrote 1800 poems - only found when she died
  • suffered from seasonal depressio
