Arthrology: Elbow Flashcards
What does the elbow joint consist of?
Humeroulnar and humeralradial articulations
At the humeroulnar articulation, what is articulating?
Anteriorly: Trochlea of humerus articulates with trochlear notch of the ulna
Posteriorly: Olecranon of the ulna with the olecranon fossa
What does the olecranon fully articulate with the olecranon fossa?
In full extension
At the humeroradial articulation, what is articulating?
The capitulum articulates with the head of the radius
What kind of joint is the elbow?
Synovial, Hinge
Very stable! Whoo!
Available movements
Flexion
Extension (closed pack position)
Ligaments of the elbow
- Lateral (radial) Collateral Ligament
2. Medial (ulnar) Collateral Ligament
Where does the lateral collateral ligament attach?
Lateral epicondyle – annular ligament of the radius
Where does the medial collateral ligament attach?
Medial epicondyle – coronoid process, olecranon process
Where is the olecranon bursa? + A.k.a
Between the olecranon and the overlying skin
“Student’s Elbow”
At the Proximal Radioulnar Joint, what is articulating. What type of joint is it?
Head of the radius with the radial notch of the ulna
Synovial, Pivot
What does the radioulnar joint allow for?
Movement of the head of the radius against the ulna
How does the head of the radius rotate?
Within the ring formed by the annular ligament
Used to describe the rotational movements of the forearm
Pronation/Supination
Palm faces down
Pronation
Palm faces up
Supination
Describe the annular ligament
- U-shaped
- Runs from the anterior surface of the radial notch around the head of the radius to the posterior surface of the radial notch.
- Holds radial head in place
What saying is involved with the annular ligament
“Slipped Elbow”
Distal Radioulnar Joint articulations and type of joint
The head of the ulna articulates with the ulnar notch of the radius.
Synovial, pivot
What does the Distal Radioulnar Joint allow for?
Allows for movement of the radius around a relatively fixed ulna
Available movements of the Distal Radioulnar Joint
Pronation/Supination
What binds the radius and ulna together?
An articular disc
What does the articulating disc do at the distal radius and ulna?
Separates the distal radioulnar joint and the wrist joint cavities. Ulna does not directly articulate with the carpal bones
What ligament is involved with the distal radioulnar joint? What does it attach?
Palmar and Dorsal radioulnar ligaments
Distal Ulnar–Distal Radius (dorsal and palmar surfaces)
What helps to stabilize the radius and ulna and the proximal and distal joints?
An interosseous membrane
