Arterial Blood Gas Flashcards
What is the Pulmonary transit time?
Amount of time that the erythrocytes and plasma are in contact and able to participate in gas exchange - 0.75 seconds.
What is normal Blood pH?
7.35-7.45
Why is it important to regulate blood pH?
The acidity of the blood must be tightly regulated, marked changes will alter the 3D structure of proteins
What percentage of acid produced by the body is respiratory acid?
99%
What generates a Rapid compensatory effect?
Changes in ventilation can stimulate a RAPID compensatory response to change CO2 elimination and therefore alter pH
What causes a slower compensatory response to increase/decrease;s in pH?
Changes in HCO3- and H+ retention/secretion in the kidneys can stimulate a SLOW compensatory response to increase/decrease pH
What does an acidosis need to correct?
alkalosis
What does an alkalosis need to correct?
acidosis
