Arm Osteology Clinical Notes Flashcards
Greenstick Fracture
Fractures in younger children are often in complete and refereed to as green stick because it resembles what trying to snap a green stick looks like
Typical fracture of the Clavicle since it is one of the most fractured bones due to direct and indirect injuries received by falling
What are the most common fractures of the Humerus
Occurs at the Surgical Neck
The greater tubercle is also susceptible to avulsion by the supraspinatus, infraspinatus and teres minor that inserts there
Pinching of the Ulnar N
runs along the groove for the ulnar nerve in the medial aspect of the elbow, can b pinched or hit and gives rise to the common phrase “hitting your funny bone”
Severe abduction of the extended elbow
result in avulsion of the medial humeral epicondyle
Fractured Elbow
Breacking of the olecranon and happens in cases of falling and the triceps brachii can cause the avulsion of the olecranon
Colles Fracture
Fracture of the distal end of the radius (from breaking falls) and are common and are referred to as colles fracture
looks like a dinner fork
often the styloid process of the ulna is often avulsed in this situation
What is the most common fractured carpel bone?
Scaphoid in the means of breaking a fall
misdiagnosed as a severe sprain because not visible on a radiograpgh
distal fragment of bone is susceptible to avascular necrosis
Carpel tunnel
Swelling of tendons occurs in the carpel tunnel the median N can be compressed causing severe pain and leads to parasthesia, anasthesia and pain
usually in the first three digits and half of the 4th
Guyons Canal Syndrome
depression between the pisiform and the hamulus of the hamate called the Ulnar Canal is susceptible to compression comprimising the Ulnar N leading to loss of sensation and muscle Weakness
Lose sensation in 5th digit and lateral side of the 4th digit
Boxers fracture
Head of the 5th metacarpel is susceptible to fracture when a person punches something with a closed fist
Distal phalanges break
Commonly due to being shut in a car door, these phalanges must be aligned properly due to the complexity of the flexor tendons.
Glenoid Labrum Tear
Occurs in baseball players from throwing a ball, caused via sudden contraction of the biceps Brachii M and occurs in the anterosuperior part
