Arm Neurology Clinical notes Flashcards
Erb-duchenne Palsy or Waiters tip position
injury to the superior part of brachial plexus C5-C6
caused by stretch of the angle between the neck and the shoulder ripping the spinal roots off the spinal cord
patient will have an adducted and medially rotated arm and an extended elbow
claw hand or klumpke paralysis
injury to the inferior part of the prachial plexus
increasing the angle between the trunk and the upper limb affecting the short muscles of the hand
claw hand when an individual tries to make a fist
Compression of the cords of the brachial plexus
prolonged periods with the upper limb extended over the head
get pain radiating down the arm, loss of sensation, tingling of the arms and weakness of the hands
Brachial muscle paralyzation
injury to the musculocutaneous N usually from blunt force or trauma
injury to the axillary nerve
atrophy of the deltoid M and loss of sensation over the superolateral Arm, where the superior lateral brachial Cutaneous N exists
Apes hand
injury to the median N in the wrist
results in an adducted thumb and thenar eminence atrophy
Hand of Benediction
injury to the median N at the elbow inhibits flexion of the 2nd and 3rd digits
also see symptoms of apes hand
4 ulnar injury locations and symptoms
posterior to the medial humeral epicondyle
between the ulnar and humeral heads of the flexor carpi ulnaris M (cubital tunnel)
or at the wrist or hand
extensive loss of sensory and motor control in the hand, when an individual tries to make a fist it appears as a Claw hand
Handlebar neuropathy
Ulnar N compression at the spot of the hamulus of the hammate B. like when riding a bike
can produce sensory loss on the medial side of the hand and weakness of the intrinsic hand muscles
Wrist drop
injury to the Radial N which causes an impairment of elbow extension and thumb abduction and extension
