Arm and Cubital Fossa Flashcards
what are the components of the anterior compartment of the arm
- flexors of the arm and elbow
- musculocutaneous nerve
- biceps brachii
- coracobrachialis
- brachialis
describe the short head of biceps brachii
Attachment:
- coracoid process
Insertion:
- radial tuberosity
Function:
- supination and flexion of elbow (supine)
- resists dislocation
Innervation:
- Musculocutaneous nerve (C5,6)
describe the long head of biceps brachii
Attachment:
- supraglenoid tubercle of scapula
Insertion:
- radial tuberosity
Function:
- supination and flexion of elbow
- prevents head of humerus from moving superiorly
Innervation:
- musculocutaneous nerve (C5,6)
Describe the coracobrachialis
Attachment:
- coracoid process of scapula
Insertion:
- medial mid-shaft humerus
Function:
- flexion & adduction of arm
Innervation:
- musculocutaneous nerve (C5-7)
describe the brachialis
Inferior to biceps brachii
Attachment:
- distal half of anterior surface of humerus
Insertion:
- ulnar tuberosity and coronoid process
Function:
- flexion of elbow
Innervation:
- musculocutaneous C5,6
- small component of lateral fibres from radial nerve C7
describe the triceps brachii (long head)
Attachment:
- infraglenoid tubercle of scapula
Insertion:
- olecranon of ulna
Function:
- extends elbow joint
- resits dislocation
Innervation:
- radial nerve (C6-8)
describe the triceps brachii (medial head)
Attachment:
- posterior surface of shaft of humerus
Insertion:
- olecranon of ulna
Function:
- extends elbow joint
Innervation:
- radial nerve (C6-8)
describe the triceps brachii (lateral head)
Attachment:
- humerus superior to radial groove
Insertion:
- olecranon of ulna
Function:
- extends elbow joint
Innervation:
- radial nerve (C6-8)
what are the branches of the brachial artery
- profunda brachii
- superior ulnar collateral
- radial collateral
- inferior ulnar collateral
what are the boundaries of the cubital fossa
lateral = brachioradialis
medial = pronator teres
roof = skin, fascia, aponeurosis
floor = brachialis
what veins lie in the superficial fascia above the cubital fossa
- cephalic
- basilic
communicate via median cubital vein
what are the contents of the cubital fossa
MEDIAL TO LATERAL
- median nerve
- bifurcation of brachial artery (ulnar & radial)
- tendon of biceps
- radial nerve
deep veins accompany the artery
what is the function of the ligaments of the elbow joint
- medial and lateral collateral prevent abduction/adduction
- annular ligament around neck of radius allows pronation and supination
