Q

Why is fe3+ more acidic than fe2+

A

Fe 3+ has a higher charge there greater charge density and is a smaller ion
Fe 3+ is more polarising so attracts lone pair on ligand of oxygen in water
This weakens O-H bond
So fe3+ complex releases more H+ ions

Q

Fe 3+ and Al3+ in water

A

They act an acid ( proton acceptor ( 1-) )
[Al(H2O)6]3+ + H2O = [Al(H2O)5(OH)]2+ + H3O+

Q

Reactions with a base such as NaOH

A

Salt + water and balance
[Fe(H2O)6]3+ + 3OH- = [Fe(H2O)3(OH)3] + 3H2O
[ Fe(H2O)6]2+ + 2OH- = [Fe(H2O)4(OH)2] + 2H2O
