Approaches to Word Meanings Flashcards
1
Q
What is componential analysis
A
analysis in terms of semantic features
-gives necessary/sufficient properties
2
Q
give an example of a componential analysis
A
ram = +male+adult ewe= -male+adult
3
Q
advantages of the componential view
A
- captures similarities and differences between families of words (ram/ewe/bull)
- provides the basis for an account of antonymy and synonymy
- natural for some areas of vocab (kinship)
4
Q
disadvantages of componential analysis
A
- lack of plausible analyses for many words (cup vs mug?)
- some categories lack common property
- many Cs have fuzzy borders (colours/shades)
- many have internal structure (birds=penguins/sparrow)
5
Q
what is a prototype?
A
“a kind of X”
member of a category that best represents the category as a whole
the denotation of a word has clear,
prototypical members
6
Q
advantages of the prototype
A
- answers the challenges of the semantic feature approach (lack of plausible analyses, fuzzy boundaries, internal structure)
- evidence from Language Universals
- Psycholinguistic evidence
- evidence from language acquisition (overextension of terms in a familiar aspect- daddy=all males)
7
Q
disadvantages of prototype
A
- guppy effect
P for pet fish, but not for pet or fish
