Appendix B: Alternative/Unfounded Diets Flashcards

Q

What are the common food restrictions of the Alkaline diet?

A

80% alkaline (veggies/low-sugar fruits/legumes) /20% acidic (beef/poultry/dairy/eggs/coffee/sugar/alcohol)

It has ten levels, each more restrictive until at a 100% raw/100% vegan diet

Restricted foods:
not eating certain food combinations (carbs and acid foods; protein and carbs; two proteins)
not consuming proteins with fats and acids
eating only one starch per meal and not consuming starches with sugars
avoid melons and not drinking milk with other foods
drinking 2+ quarts water/day
using water alkalinizers to raise the pH of water

Q

What are the basics of the Bill Henderson protocol? What is its mechanism/goal?

A

Based on the Budwig diet-vegan/raw at core with a cottage cheese and flaxseed oil mixture (1 cup CC, 6-8 Tbsp oil) consumed–can be in 2 servings vs one. Also promotes supplements (up to 46 pills are in the daily plan)

Based on the belief that cancer is caused by lack of oxygen to the cells, weakened immune system, excess acidity, and toxicity from tobacco/alcohol/asbestos. Works to make body more alkaline and claims to improve cell oxygenation.

A

Mostly Vegan so can not be enough energy/protein along with many micro deficiencies

also, the high amount of flaxseed oil is a risk. More that 2 Tbsp/day can cause diarrhea, more than 4 Tbsp/day can enhance blood thinners (calls for 6-8 Tbsp/day)

Q

What are the basics of the Budwig Diet? What is its mechanism/goal?

A

A diet in highly unsaturated fatty acids would kill cancer cells by promoting incomplete cell division and cell death. A lack of dietary omega-3’s reduced cell oxygenation and the cheese/flaxseed mixture would be absorbed better.

Vegetarian diet with some cheese (particularly quark cheese-german cottage cheese), whole grains, organic fruits/vegetables, nuts, potatoes, green tea, sauerkraut/sauerkraut juice. Also has the cottage cheese/flaxseed oil mixtures
