A

Complementary and Alternative Medicine - Complementary is used along with mainstream and Alternative is uses instead of mainstream medicine

Integrative medicine - more recently used, emphasizes the integration of conventional practices with those that have been considered CAM and supported by evidence of safety and effectiveness

Breast cancer patients are the most prevalent (partly due to research) but so are GYN

What are some motivational factors that could influence a patient to pursue CAM? What tends to be the underlining factor?

A

influence - social relationships, cultural, spiritual, and religious beliefs, practitioners, family/friends, folks in the waiting area/support groups

Underlining factor - provides patients with a way to be more involved in their own care – they are doing something vs something being done to them - help manage vulnerability, loss and uncertainty feelings

What are some proposed benefits from Qigong and Tai Chi?

A

Significant benefits have been shown for both with improving fatigue, sleeping difficulty, depression and QOL.

Also found to have some improvements with post op upper-limb lymphedema, lung function, sleep quality, limb muscle strength, fatigue and distress

A

Reduction in depression, anxiety, stress and improved QOL

One study did find a possible impact on cytokine levels (increasing interleukin-4 and decreasing interferon-y) and aiding the immune system

A

Yoga practice has been shown to reduce stress, improve body satisfaction, and improved mood. Been shown to have a positive impact on body weight, partly by being associated with healthier eating and exercise. All improve body composition, which could reduce adipose tissue/cancer risk

A

It’s part of our assessment for “physical activity habits and restrictions” but it can also possibly open the door to more complete information about the patient’s physical ability and strengthen the relationship between the patient and provider
