Appendicular Skeleton Flashcards
What happened to the digits over time?
-reduction of digits
- early tetrapods had 6+ digits
- have been reductions & fusions
- phalanges can be lost, but not easily gained
How many digits do birds, horses, and humans have?
birds = 4
horses = 1
humans = 5
What is an example of a digit trying to be gained?
an extra digit that is actually a sesamoid bone
Sesamoid bone
- bone within tendon
- prevents wear on tendon
- fulcrum point for limb (patella)
- areas of high stress
- can be found in foot or hand (not everybody)
What is a fabella?
sesamoid bone opposite side of patella in 20% of people
Why is it so hard to re-gain 6+ digits?
- pleiotropic (one gene affecting multiple traits) developmental effects
- hand-food-genital syndrome
What is hand-food-genital syndrome?
- changes in hand/foot development
- leads to problems with reproduction tract
What advantage do diggers have?
mechanical advantage - lots of power - less speed
What advantage do runners have?
velocity advantage - lots of speed - less power
What is an example of an animal that has both force and speed and why?
a deer because it has many muscles with many insertion points on bone and therefore different fulcrum points (input levers differ due to differing muscle attachments)
What are the muscles of deer that give it, its dual advantage?
- contraction of gluteus medius - high velocity
- contraction of semimembranous - mechanical advantage
Example of flexion & extion
- limited to 1 plane
- lateral & medial malleolus grip ankle bone like wrench on bolt
Example of elastic recoil
achilles tendon
- rubber-band recoil in camels is energy saving
