APES Ch 23 Flashcards
Minerals
Naturally occurring solid chemical element or inorganic compound with a crystal structure
Rock
Solid aggregation of minerals
Metal
Type of chemical element that is typically Lustrous Opaque Malleable and Can conduct heat and electricity
Ore
Mineral or group of minerals in which we can extract metals
Smelting
Heating ore beyond its melting point and combining it with other metals or chemicals
Tailings
Portions of ore left over after metals have been extracted
Strip mining
When layers of surface soil and rock are removed from large areas to expose the resource
Acid drainage
When sulfide minerals in newly exposed rock surfaces react with oxygen and rain water to produce sulfuric acid
Subsurface mining
Shafts are excavated deep into the ground and tunnels are dug
Open pit mining
Digging a giant hole and removing the desired ore and all the waste rock and surrounding ore
Placer mining
Using running water to separate lightweight mud and gravel from heavier minerals if value
Mountaintop removal mining
Several hundred vertical feet of mountaintop may be removed to allow recovery of entire seams of a recourse
Reclamation
Restore the site to a condition similar to its condition before mining
